01

Every pot, kept apart

Each SIPP, workplace pot and ISA is modelled separately, with its own growth rate, crystallised status and tax-free cash — never merged into one balance.

02

Tax-aware to the pound

Withdrawals are ordered to keep you inside the band you choose. Personal allowance, higher-rate thresholds and tax-free cash phasing are all applied per year.

DB pensions

{{ secNoteDb }}
A Defined Benefit (DB) pension — often called a Final Salary pension — pays a guaranteed income for life, worked out from your salary and years of service, not a pot you draw down. Your employer's scheme funds and pays it, usually rising each year with inflation (up to a cap), and continues at a reduced rate to a spouse or partner after your death.

DC pensions & SIPPs

Enter the balance you expect at retirement — or, if that's still years off and unknown, today's balance plus a monthly contribution, and the plan will project it forward for you. Add each pot separately — growth rates and crystallised status differ by provider, and combining them hides that.

Annuities

Other income & savings

{{ secNoteOther }}
Savings pots (investment account, cash savings, or “Other savings pot”) hold a balance the plan can draw from. “Other income” is different — a fixed amount paid each year, never drawn down; use it for rent, part-time work, trust income, or dividends (set its Tax treatment to Dividends). Start and end are given as ages, so each owner needs a date of birth in Household.

What this does not model

Every figure here is a central estimate on flat growth. Real returns arrive in a different order each year, and the order matters — a poor decade early leaves less capital than the same average return arriving late. Read the closing balance as one plausible outcome, not a floor.
Not included
Personal allowance taper above £100,000 · capital gains tax, and a general investment account's growth taxed here as interest (dividends can be entered under Other income and are taxed at dividend rates) · National Insurance on earned income · inheritance tax · a pension inherited before 75, which is treated as though after it
How time is handled
Figures are modelled once per tax year, at 6 April. Income starting mid-year is counted from the following 6 April. Nothing before retirement is modelled — no contributions, no growth on the balances you entered.

Allowances

Personal savings allowance, by the band the person lands in
The savings allowance is judged against UK-wide thresholds even for a Scottish taxpayer, so a Scottish intermediate-rate payer still receives the basic-rate £1,000.
Starting rate for savings
An extra 0% band for savings interest, on top of the allowance above. It shrinks £1 for every £1 of non-savings income (pensions, drawdown, earnings) over the personal allowance, so it is gone once that reaches £{{ savingsStartingRateGoneAt }}. UK-wide — applies in both regimes.
Dividend tax rates, by the band the dividend lands in
Dividend tax is not devolved. These rates and the UK-wide band thresholds apply to every plan, Scotland included. Dividends are taxed on top of all other income, after the dividend allowance above.

Income tax bands

Two regimes, chosen per household by tax residence
SCOTLAND {{ scotBandCount }} bands · {{ scotBandRange }}
Band From To Rate %
REST OF UK {{ rukBandCount }} bands · {{ rukBandRange }}
Band From To Rate %
The shaded rows are the higher-rate threshold and above — the higher-rate band is the one the drawdown engine protects against when “protect the higher-rate band” is on. From and To are the band edges in pounds; leave To blank for the top band.

Inflation defaults

These are the figures a new plan starts from. A plan can override both.

Pension rules

DC access age
Not one figure — it depends on date of birth. See the table below.
55 or 57
A LISA drawn before its access age is charged at the rate above. The engine holds LISA money back until then unless nothing else is left.

DC access age

Matched on date of birth · the earliest a DC pot can be drawn
The normal minimum pension age has been 55 since 2010 and rises to 57 on 6 April 2028, with no phasing. Because the rule turns on a date rather than an age, the earliest a given person can draw depends on when they were born.
Born Type Age Note
to
until then
Rows are matched top to bottom on date of birth: “from” is inclusive, “before” is exclusive; leave “from” blank for the earliest band. A window band gives the earlier age up to the deadline and the later age afterwards. Some pots carry a protected pension age of 55 where scheme rules gave an unqualified right before 4 November 2021 — that is a fact about the pot, set on the DC pot itself, and overrides this table.

State Pension age

Matched on date of birth · suggests the age a plan starts from
Born Type Age Note
to
y m, + m/step
A saved plan keeps the age it was created with. When this table changes, the State Pension section of that plan shows the new suggestion beside the stored value and leaves the choice to the plan holder. A phased band steps up month by month from the start age, so the suggested age is rarely a whole number.
